Betty Liggett Obituary

Betty C. Liggett

Nee Thereau

Highland, IN/Chicago, IL

December 26, 1945 – December 18, 2023

Betty Liggett, age 77, of Highland entered into the presence of the Lord on Monday, December 18, 2023.

Born & raised in Minneapolis, MN where she was the 3rd of 5 children born to Donald & Ruby Thereau.  Betty was an avid reader from early childhood & secretly entertained ideas of someday writing her own books.  As a young teenager she developed an interest in the Baptist church and met her future husband Dale while participating in their church youth group.   Upon marriage, Betty & Dale managed to lead a semi-nomadic life while starting their family.  In the first 15 years of marriage they moved no less than 9 times within 5 different states before finally settling down in Chicago where they finished raising their 6 children. Throughout the years, no matter the distance, Betty loved nothing more than traveling back to her hometown of Minneapolis to spend time w/her siblings, nieces, nephews, & parents.   Betty became incredibly active in her younger children’s school PTA’s and thoroughly enjoyed traveling around the country as an IL rep for PTA conventions.  In the late 90’s Betty began working the overnight shift at White Castle & became a favorite w/some of their regular early morning customers who enjoyed interacting with her as they started their days.  After losing her husband to a heart attack in 2004 & surviving Colon Cancer in 2006, Betty’s increasingly failing vision required her to retire from White Castle in 2008.  In retirement Betty embraced the role of being an active grandparent.  After moving to Highland to live w/family, some of Betty’s favorite activities involved spoiling her grandkids while on trips to Scheeringa Farm & Brookfield Zoo.  In her free time, Betty enjoyed reading, watching Midsomer Murders, Doctor Who, and a variety of Cooking and Baking shows, or listening to music by Celtic Thunder.

She is survived by her children: Cheryl Canning, Robert (Krista) Liggett, Barbara (Mike) Shelton, Beth (Rob) Nielsen, Ruth (David) Richards and son-in-law, Chuck Hayes; 15 grandchildren: Daniel, Stephanie, Tom, Debbie, Logan, Kelly, Audrey, Sam, Calindria, Patrick, Dakota, Emma, Christopher, Nathan, and Abigail; sister, Barbara Eliason; sister-in-law, Karen Thereau; as well as numerous nieces, nephews & friends.

Preceded in death by parents Donald and Ruby Thereau; husband, Dale Liggett; daughter, Carol Hayes; siblings: Beverly Georges, Corrine Albrecht, William Thereau; brothers-in-law: James Georges, Gerald Eliason, and Larry Albrecht
