IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alphonso
Blackwell
October 5, 1940 – December 6, 2024
Alphonso Blackwell passed away peacefully in the arms of his wife, GG on Friday, December 6, 2024 at the age of 84.
Born and raised on the family farm in Roseland, Louisiana, the family left the deep south for the metropolis of Los Angeles, California. Al lived a life full of adventure, hard work, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys in life. In his early twenties he got involved in the trucking industry which eventually led him to the Pacific Northwest. In 1973 he started, Mr. Al's Trucking. He based his business in Seattle where there were more business opportunities. Years later he made Seattle his home where he spent the majority of his days with the love of his life, GG.
He worked as a dedicated truck driver for over 50 years. He covered well over a million miles and formed lasting bonds with his colleagues on the road. He was known for his infectious sense of humor, comedic banter, and ability to make friends wherever he went. Affectionately called "Big Al", his work ethic and commitment to his profession were unmatched. Many have credited him with teaching them how to drive.
Outside his career Al was passionate about many things. He had a deep love for the blues and jazz: often spending hours listening to his favorite records. A lover of good food, he was known for cooking incredible soul food, which he shared generously with family and friends. He loved gambling. Whether it was playing the lotto or trying his luck at the casino, he never stopped believing the unlikely was possible. By his example, he preached, "Work hard, do what you enjoy with the ones you love and your never to old to dream."
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alcee and Alma; siblings: Alcee, Diana, Jerry, and Hattie; and children: Alfonce, Murlar, Allyce, and LaZanne. Al is survived by his wife, GG; children: Jackie, Spencer, Lavern, Sundra, LaShell, and Ric; siblings: Clara, Cynthia, Dennis, Laura, Loretta, MaryAnn, and Vada; as well as many grandchildren and friends who will hold onto the memory of his laugh accompanied by the twinkle in his eye and a resounding, "Yeah, Buddy!"
Private funeral services were entrusted to Bocken Funeral Home, Hammond, IN.
His memory will live on in the music he loved, the meals he prepared, and the stories he shared with all who were lucky enough to have known him. Rest in peace, Al.
