Becky Jo (Spencer) Hassellof ,age 60, of Portage, joined her Heavenly Father Wednesday, June 29, 2011. Becky died peacefully at home with her husband of 38 years holding her hand. She battled the bulbar form of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis—ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) —for nearly three years. She is survived by her husband, Don R. Hassellof and daughter, Kenna Joann Hassellof of Portage; stepmother and father-in-law, Joanne (Rudy) Hartge of Crown Point; brother, Kenneth R. Spencer of Spokane, Wash.; niece Angela Spencer of Brandon, Fla.; brother-in-law and wife Kevin (Carol) Hassellof of Munster and many more relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Woodrow Spencer of Tucson, Ariz.
A celebration of Becky's life will occur Wednesday July 6,2011 at 11:00 AM DIRECTLY at Hessville Baptist Church at 6423 Arizona Ave., Hammond with Pastor Jeffrey Hannon officiating.
Friends are invited to meet with the family at Bocken Funeral Home at 7042 Kennedy Ave., Hammond (Hessville) on Tuesday July 5, 2011 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. and on Wednesday at Hessville Baptist Church from 10am until 11am.
Becky was a child of God and an active member at Hessville Baptist Church. She worked with the AWANA ministry for 20-plus years and taught the Ladies' Sunday School Class. Becky devoted her life to family, friends and serving the Lord. She was born and raised in Tucson, Ariz., and came to the Chicago area to marry her husband in 1972. She was a loving mother and wife. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to raise awareness for ALS research. Becky's daughter, Kenna, will complete the "Run to Defeat ALS" half-marathon in Chicago on Aug. 14th to benefit ALS research. The family asks for sponsorship for her run.
