Bernice Mary Rak, age 89, of Hammond entered into the gates of heaven on Tuesday, August 6, 2013.
She is survived by two daughters: Linda (Charles) Kelleman and Shirley (Robert) Wade;
1 son, Terry Rak;
6 grandchildren: Gina (Jason) Allen, Ken Kelleman, Eric Kelleman, Robyn (Jason) Blackford, Amy (Mark) Sullivan and Amber Rak;
6 great grandchildren: Andrew "AJ" Blackford, Jillian Blackford, Nicholas Sullivan, Leah Sullivan, Savannah Gilbert and Stellah Rak;
Close friends, Helen, Evelyn and Mary, along with
many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and dear friends.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband of 28 years,  Chester Rak; son, Kenneth Rak; parents, Thomas and Sofia Fus; 4 brothers: Chester, Ignatius, Steve and Tony; one sister, Cecelia Paloski.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. directly at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 7132 Arizona Avenue, Hammond (Hessville) with Rev. Charles Mosley celebrant. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Calumet City, IL. Friends are invited to meet with the family for a time of visitation on Friday, August 9, 2013 at Bocken Funeral Home, 7042 Kennedy Avenue, Hammond, (Hessville) from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
There will be a time of viewing at the church on Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the mass at 10:00 a.m.
Bernice has been a lifetime resident of the Calumet Area and was a 1942 graduate of East Chicago Washington High School. She has been a faithful member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church for over 25 years. Bernice was a very devout catholic who loved the Lord and always found time to pray. For many years she worked at the Diocese of Gary in numerous capacities. She was a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, devoted godmother, aunt and friend who will be dearly missed. Bernice was passionate about her family and always wanted to help others. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation, Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, or Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.
