Bertha Marie George, age 83, of Hammond, passed away suddenly Friday, October 14, 2011 while visiting in Tuscaloosa, AL.
She is survived by 4 daughters; Gerry (Robert)Wagner of Villa Park, IL, Judy (Doyle) Goins of Chesterton, IN, Sylvia Hayes of St. Augustine, FL and Connie (Garry) Brackett of Panama City, FL. 3 sons; John George of Crown Point, IN, F. Dwight (Linda) George of Hammond, IN and W.Dale (Melissa) George of Wheaton, IL.
14 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild
1 brother Howard (Sarah) Poole of McCalla, AL and 1 sister Onzell Dennis of West Blockton, AL
Numerous nieces, nephews great nieces, nephews and friends.
Preceded in death by her husband John George in 1985, 2 sons; Marvin George in the Vietnam Conflict 1968 and Kenneth "Butch" George in 1981.
Parents, Claude Shackleford and Rosa Poole, 1 sister and companion Claudia Williams and 1 brother in law Edward Dennis.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday October 21, 2011 at 10am at the Bocken Funeral Home 7042 Kennedy Avenue, Hammond (Hessville) with Dr Garry Brackett officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Lawn Cemetery, Schererville; IN. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Thursday October 20, 2011 from 2pm til 8pm at Bocken Funeral Home.
Marie was born and raised in Green pond, AL and moved to the Hammond area in 1953. She was a devoted and active member of the Hessville Church of God of Prophecy for over 55 years where she enjoyed serving in many areas including the women's ministry and baking during the holidays. Marie was a member of Gold Star Mothers and will be remembered for her independent and competitive character, she loved flowers and enjoyed playing softball and board games. Marie was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great and great great grandmother whose family was her number one priority, she will be dearly missed.
