Billy Joe McCugh

Billy Joe McCugh, a man whose life radiated warmth, devotion, and an unwavering commitment to both his family and friends, left this world on May 20th, 2026, in Hobart, Indiana. Born on June 24th, 1945, in Pisgah, Alabama, Billy’s journey was marked by a tireless spirit and a heart that found purpose in service, fellowship, and faith.

A self-employed businessman, Billy carved out a distinguished career in the fencing industry, among many other ventures he pursued with vigor throughout his life. Yet, it was never merely about business to Billy; it was about connection. He had the rare gift of never meeting a stranger, transforming each encounter into an opportunity for ministry. His customers were not just clients, but friends, and every handshake was met with genuine kindness and open-hearted friendship. His spirit was a vessel used for his larger mission—bringing people together, making them feel welcome, and extending his remarkable capacity for listening and offering wisdom when it was needed most.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Billy lived fully in the richness of life’s simple pleasures. He throughly enjoyed fishing, hunting, tending to his garden, caring for horses, playing cornhole, cooking alongside his wife, watching the Cubs with his daughter, Melissa, and reading his Bible. But more than hobbies, these were expressions of a soul deeply connected to the land, to joy, and to the gospel he not only read but preached passionately. His proudest accomplishment wasn’t just found in business or activities, but in the profound calling he embraced alongside his family—becoming a minister of the gospel.

Billy’s personality was as vibrant as it was enduring: outgoing, loving, kind, hardworking, and a determined go-getter. He embraced life with open arms and a ready smile, his kindness evident to all who crossed his path. His home was a sanctuary where all were made to feel welcomed, and his ear was always lent to those who came in need.

He was preceded in death by his father Archie McCugh, his mother Ellie Sprayberry, and his grandfather Joe Haley, and his grandmother Nettie Haley. Their memory lives on in the legacy of love and faith he carried so strongly.

Billy’s legacy now rests in the cherished presence of those he loved dearly: his devoted wife of 60 years, Freda McCugh; his children, Darrin & Kim McCugh, Dina & Richard Westmoreland, Melissa McCugh, Ben & Rikki McCugh, Amanda & Danny Huskisson, and Felicia & Eric Wilk; and his beloved sister, Judi Self. He was further blessed with 40 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each a living testament to a life of love, guidance, and faithfulness.
