George William Butler Jr. "Bill" age 74, of Hammond, entered into eternal rest peacefully on Monday, August 10, 2020.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Yolanda Sue Butler (nee Croach); two children: Jennifer (Ken) Schwingendorf and George William "Billy" Butler III; three grandchildren: Margaret McKnabb, Alexsis Butler, Kenneth Schwingendorf Jr.; two great grandchildren: Aleviah I. Butler and Carter B. Hyde; cousin, Sharon Bobeck as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Preceded in death by his parents, George William and Wilma Blanche Butler; sister, Lucy Ella (Robert) Jarman.
Friends are invited to join the family for a memorial visitation on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at Riverside Community Church 7449 Jefferson Avenue, Hammond IN 46324 from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. with a memorial service to be held at 7 p.m. with Pastor Dan Hendon, officiating. Face mask are required per State of Indiana Covid-19 guidelines.
Bill was a longtime resident of the region. He graduated from Whiting High School in 1964. He worked for LTV Steel for over 33 years. Bill made many friends over the years as he was active in numerous churches singing groups; he was a faithful member of Riverside Community Church. He and Yolanda ministered to Lee County Prison in Ft Myers Florida where they would spend winters, by donating thousands of Bibles. They also ministered to children in Haiti by making clothes for the children. Bill was actively involved in AA over the years encouraging many by his testimony of continuous sobriety since 1984. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who will be missed by many. In lieu of flowers memorials to the family would be appreciated to be used in their ministries.
