George R. "Bob" Hanson, age 80, of Hammond passed away peacefully at Wynscape Skilled Nursing Facility in Wheaton, IL on Saturday May 26, 2012.
He is survived by his children; Patricia Hanson of Yorkville, IL and Tom Hanson of Chicago, IL.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years Madeline Hanson (nee Vanzo), son Scott Hanson, sister Louise Rider , brother Paul Hanson and parents, John and Zelda Hanson (Nee Merritt).
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, June 1, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Bocken Funeral Home, 7042 Kennedy Avenue, Hammond (Hessville) . Burial will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Thursday, May 31, 2012  from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Bocken Funeral Home.
George also known as Bob was born "at home" in Whiting and grew up in Hammond and spent the majority of his adult life in Hammond as well. The exceptions being when he was stationed in New Jersey while serving his country in the US Army, a period of 7 years in Oak Park , IL and these last 5 years in Wheaton, IL.  Bob was a 1949 graduate of Hammond Tech High School, a  graduate of Valpo Technical Institute and a 1968 graduate of Purdue University Calumet's Engineering Program. Bob married the love of his life Madeline Vanzo on February 16, 1952 at the First Church of Christ in Whiting, and enjoyed nearly 53 years with her. He was honorably discharged from the Army on August 13, 1954 and retired from Inland Steel in the early 1990's where he had served in a variety of engineering roles including the role of foreman. Bob was a long time member and former deacon of the First Church of Christ in Whiting. Bob was a kind and loving husband and father. He has lived very happily at Wynscape Skilled Nursing Facility in Wheaton, IL, since August 2007. He will be sorely missed by both staff and friends alike. His family will miss him more than words can say.
The family requests that only family members send flowers. The family request no other flowers or plants please. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
