Gerald Ray Griffin, age 79, of Hammond, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his loved ones on Saturday June 1, 2024. He is survived by his four children: Carrie (David) Griffin-Boyd, Shane (Cheryl) Wilson-Griffin, Shawn (Jessica Renslow) Griffin and Katie (Linas) Smulkstys; five grandchildren: Duncan Boyd, Jonas and Margot Smulkstys, Konrad and Ewan Griffin; several nieces, nephews and friends.  Preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Karen Virginia Griffin (nee Reynolds); parents: Wilbur and Louise Griffin; beloved son: Jimmy Griffin; siblings: Earl, Nathan Wayne, Wilbur, David and Elizabeth Ann Griffin.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. at Bocken Funeral Home 7042 Kennedy Avenue, Hammond (Hessville). Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Hammond. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Wednesday Morning from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 12:00 p.m.

Jerry aka Papa Smurf was born in East Chicago and raised in Canalou, Mo.; He went on to serve in the United States Army. Jerry was retired from Amoco and U.S. Steel.  He enjoyed bowling, golfing, watching all sports and cheering on the Cubs. Spending time with his children and grandchildren which were the center of his life, was his favorite thing to do. Jerry was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and lifelong friend to many and will be deeply missed.
