Gilbert "Judge" Gonzalez, age 89, of Calumet City IL, formerly of South Chicago, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
Judge was retired from Wisconsin Steel Works and Chicago Transit Authority. He was an avid collector of trains. He found relaxation and peace watching his trains go around his elaborate train track setup. He was a do-it-yourselfer and could fix anything. He always had a tool or part for anything and everything. He enjoyed watching sports and cheering on the Chicago Cubs and Bears with his family. Judge was active in politics and always willing to serve his community. He was a kind, friendly, gentle and happy person. He was a loving devoted husband, father and huge supporter of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be sorely missed.
He is survived by his precious wife of 70 years, Angeline Gonzalez (nee Raya); loving children: Lillian Rodriguez, Shirley (Javier) Salazar, Gilbert (Kimberly) Gonzalez Jr. and Christopher Gonzalez (Jodie Zimmermann); loving grandchildren: Angela (Joseph) Caprino, Ariana (Drew) Remus, Mallory Salazar (Brent Dunn), Jessica Salazar (John Blalock), Steven Salazar, Richard Salazar (Samantha Iwinski), Mary Langdon, Morgan Gonzalez, Allison Gonzalez and Peyton Gonzalez; precious great-grandchildren: Annabella Caprino, Rocco Caprino, Stella Dunn and Loretta Dunn; honorary dad of Rose Martinez; cherished siblings: Rose (Luis) Esquivel and Esther (late Alphonso) Martinez; as well as many nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.
Preceded in death by his parents Encarnacion and Elisa Gonzalez; granddaughter Jennifer Rodriguez; siblings: Ruben (Maria) Gonzalez, Carmen (late Enrique) Villa, Charlie (late Margarita) Gonzalez, Paula Corona and Connie Torres.
Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation on Monday, July 14, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Bocken Funeral Home, 7042 Kennedy Avenue, Hammond IN, 46323. A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. Directly at Our Lady Guadalupe Catholic Church, 3200 East 91st Street, Chicago IL, 60617. A visitation will take place at church on Tuesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name to the Shrine of St. Jude or the American Kidney Fund would be appreciated.
