Irene Alice Christy, age 94 of Hammond entered into the gates of Heaven on Monday, November 12, 2012.
Irene was born in East Chicago on March 21, 1918 and moved with her family to Hammond when she was a small child.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Senator William C. Christy, who passed away on June 6, 1987.
She is survived by 2 sons, Richard W. (Jerilynn) Christy of Dyer and Carl E. Christy of Crown Point;
2 daughters, Barbara (Ronald) Hooper of Griffith and
Diane M. (Kenneth) Banks of Onekama, MI;
9 grandchildren;
19 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild;
Daughter-in-law, Melanie Christy;
1 sister, Phyllis Vauter of Hammond;
Sister-in-law, Bernice Doppler of St. John;
Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of dear friends.
Preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Alice Doppler; 2 sisters, Margaret Carlson and Laura Sambrooks; 2 brothers, George and Fritz Doppler and dear friend and caregiver, Ann Shutko.
Irene was a faithful member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church for over 30 years, where her father, Joseph Doppler was a founding member. She served there as a Eucharistic Minister and member of the Rosary Society. She was active in the Hessville Democratic Club and was an excellent bowler in her day. In every organization she joined, she emerged as a leader, from PTA to the Mothers' of Twins Club. Irene will be remembered most for her love of baking and cooking. Some of her favorite recipes have been recognized in the Times feature article "Cook of the Week". She also authored her own collection of family recipes. She loved to prepare food and feed her family and friends, no one ever left her table hungry. She loved having a full table and sharing her recipes with anyone who asked. Irene often spoke of her mother's habit of feeding people who would come to her door during the depression. She never forgot her mother's generosity of giving freely to people in need. Irene, our Mom will be best remembered for her sweetness, her love for people, her caring of her family and her deep love of Christ.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, November 16, 2012 at 12:00 p.m., Noon. directly at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 7132 Arizona Avenue, Hammond (Hessville) with Rev. Charles Mosley celebrant.
Burial will follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Schererville.
Friends are invited to meet with the family on Thursday, November 15th at Bocken Funeral Home, 7042 Kennedy Avenue, Hammond (Hessville) from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. There will also be a time of viewing at the church on Friday morning from 11:30 a.m. until the mass at 12:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorials be made to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.
