James L. Baker, age 81, of Hammond, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 10, 2011 at his residence.
He is survived by his 2 grandchildren: Megan Guthrie and Michael Dawson; one great grandson, Brenden Guthrie;
numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Lois S. Baker (nee, Stanford); daughter, Terri-Rose (Baker)
Whittington and his parents, George Alex and Mary Bell Baker.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Bocken Funeral Home, 7042 Kennedy Avenue, Hammond (Hessville) with Carl Rose, Minister, officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Schererville, where James will be laid to rest next to his dear wife, Lois. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 from 4pm until 8pm.
James was born on February 9, 1930 in Cucumber, West Virginia and was the 11 th of many children born to George and Mary Baker. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran and recipient of a purple heart who served during the Korean Conflict. James retired from Inland Steel on January 1, 1991 after over 40 years of service. He enjoyed spending time with his family and watching his great grandson bowl and play baseball. James was a loyal Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed watching John Wayne western's. In lieu of flowers memorials to the family would be appreciated.
