James J. Smith, age 94, of Hammond, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, February 5, 2026.

He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Marilyn Louise Smith (Nee Schumm); 3 children: David (Wanda) Smith, Jeff Smith and Matt (Susan) Smith; Daughter-in-law: Kimberly Smith; 5 grandchildren: Jonathan Sasewich, Jennifer Allen, Justin (Ginger) Smith, James Smith and Benjamin Smith; 8 great-grandchildren; 1 Sister, Jean Smith; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

James was preceded in death by his parents: Harry and Alice Smith; and son: James E. Smith.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 13, 2026, from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Bocken Funeral Home, 7042 Kennedy Avenue, Hammond IN 46323 and on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. at the Church. Funeral service will be held directly at Highland First Church of the Nazarene, 9330 Kennedy Ave. Highland, IN 46322 on Saturday February 14, 2026, at 9:30 a.m.  with Pastor Nathan Bucholz officiating followed by burial at Elmwood Cemetery, Hammond.

James was a lifelong resident of the Region and a devoted, faithful member of Highland First Church of the Nazarene for decades. He was an avid and talented bowler who took great joy in the sport.  He loved watching westerns and sports, always rooting for the White Sox.
