IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joseph J.
Herrera
November 14, 1949 – April 14, 2025
Joseph "Joe" J. Herrera (Mako)
November 14, 1949 – April 14, 2025
Joseph Juventino Herrera, affectionately known as "Mako," passed away peacefully at the age of 75, surrounded by loved ones. Born and raised in East Chicago, Joe graduated from East Chicago Washington High School in 1969. He began working early, spending weekends at Youngstown Steel from 1968 to 1969 before starting his career at Inland Steel in 1970 at the 44 Slab Mill.
Shortly after, Joe proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Military Police officer from 1970 to 1974. Upon returning home, he resumed work at Inland Steel, later ArcelorMittal, where he remained a dedicated employee until his retirement in 2005. Never one to stay idle, Joe continued working at Midwest Securities until officially retiring.
At the heart of Joe's life was the love he shared with his wife, Marie. The two were inseparable, childhood sweethearts who grew up, side by side, fell in love in high school, and were married in 1973. Their love spanned decades, weathered all of life's ups and downs, and remained strong until Marie's passing in 2019. Even after her passing, Joe's devotion to her never wavered. Their story is a lasting reminder that love never ends.
Joe was a proud father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He is survived by his daughter Kelly and son Ryan; cherished grandchildren Madeline and Maxwell; and his brother Gus R. Herrera (Helen). He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family who will miss his strength, warmth, and his unmistakably warm smile.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Marie, his mother Guadalupe Herrera, sister Theresa Chapa, granddaughter Jordan, brother Frank Garcia, and sister Sandra Sotelo.
Following cremation, Family and friends are warmly invited to a visitation in loving memory of Joe, to be held at Bocken Funeral Home, 7042 Kennedy Ave, Hammond, IN 46323 on Friday, April 18, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
Joe will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his service to his country, his hardworking spirit, and the deep love he carried for Marie—proof that true love is eternal.
