Leonel Alonso Cancino Ortiz, age 55, of Hammond, passed away suddenly at his home on Friday, June 30, 2017.

He is survived by his companion, Lilia Edward; daughters: Maria Ortiz and Eva Cancino; step children: Tomika, Maurice, Samantha, Jennifer, Jillian, Adonis and Eddie; siblings: Martha, Luz, Gloria, David, Antonia, Nora and Maria; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceded in death by his parents, Francisco and Eva Cancino; brother, Francisco Cancino-Ortiz and his dogs Charlie and Paco.

Friends are invited to meet with the family for a time of visitation on Sunday, July 9, 2017, from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Bocken Funeral Home, 7042 Kennedy Avenue, Hammond (Hessville). Funeral service will be held on Monday, July 10, 2017 at Bocken Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Calumet City, IL.

Lionel was born in Chihuahua, Mexico and moved to the Chicago area in 1974 and has lived in the Hammond Hessville community in 2006. Lionel was a hard working, dependable man, keeping two and three jobs at a time. He worked as a waiter for banquets at Ramada Inn and McCormick Hotel and in stewarding at the Horseshoe Casino. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and cooking. Lionel will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
