Monica Garza, age 40, of Highland, formerly of Gary passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at the University of Chicago Hospital.

She is survived by her daughter, the love of her life and reason for living, Cheyanne; her life partner, Alfonso Chagoya; mother, Margie Garza; siblings: Joe, Jr. (Margie) Garza, Javier Garza, Johnny Garza and Melissa Huang-Garza. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great niece and 2 great nephews; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and dear friends.

Preceded in death by her father who loved her dearly, Joe Garza, Sr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 18, 2016 at 10:00 a.m., with a time of visitation from 9:30 a.m. until the Mass at 10:00 a.m. directly at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 7132 Arizona Avenue, Hammond (Hessville) with Father Charles Mosely celebrant. Private cremation will follow. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at Bocken Funeral Home, 7042 Kennedy Avenue, Hammond (Hessville) from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Monica had a love and passion for cooking. She was to receive her degree from Purdue Calumet this May for Hospitality and Tourism Management. She loved to cook meals for her family and friends and was an amazing party planner. Monica fought so many battles and had a strong will to live. She always had a smile on her face and a strong faith in God. Monica touched so many lives and was a true inspiration to all who knew and loved her.
