Ofelia Zalazar

Ofelia Zalazar, 81, a long time Gary resident, passed away on July 27, 2013 at Lake County Nursing Home in East Chicago. She was born to Julian and Dolores Garcia in Mexico on Feb.10, 1932.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law Robert and Pamela Zalazar of Hammond; her three granddaughters; Kristy (Tommy) von Rohr of Switzerland, Amy (Robert) Feaster of Hammond and Toni Zalazar of Indianapolis; and her great grandchildren Gioia and Gianni Feaster; her sisters Trini Sandoval and Carmen Garcia and numerous nieces and nephews. Her life long friend and daily confidant, Emma Fuentes of Crown Point also survives.
Ofelia was heartbrokenly preceded in death by daughter Sonja Maria Zalazar of Chicago six years ago and by her parents and remaining siblings in Mexico. All of which have certainly prepared quite the fiesta in her honor in heaven.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday July 31,2013 at 7pm at the Bocken Funeral Home 7042 Kennedy Avenue, Hammond (Hessville) with Father Steve Kosinski officiating. Friends are invited to meet with the family at Bocken Funeral Home on Wednesday July 31,2013 from 4pm until 8pm.
Ofelia spent most of her life in Gary where she lived after leaving her childhood home in Mexico as a teenager. She worked as a nurse's aid for over 25 years at Gary's Mercy Hospital where she made life long friends whom she kept in contact with many years after her retirement from there. She often spoke of her rewarding job and treasured the years she was able to work with newborns in the maternity ward.
She loved to travel,to relax in the sun, entertain and to cook. Her cooking skills were well known amongst family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. Inrecent years as doctors visits increased numerous doctors and nurses were also lucky enough to get to enjoy her culinary delights.
Ofelia loved to laugh so hard that she cried. She had silky soft, perfectly manicured hands and a quick whit.  Ofelia will be greatly missed.
