Rev. Richard Frank Chmielik, affectionately known as Ricky C., passed away unexpectedly on April 20, 2026, in his home in Hammond, Indiana. Born on August 24, 1959, in Hammond, Rick lived a life marked by dedication, service, and a deep commitment to his community and family.
A 1977 graduate of Morton High School, Rick went on to serve his country honorably as an Air Force Veteran during the Cold War. His sense of duty extended into his civilian career, where he was involved with the Lake County Sheriff Work Release program. His leadership and devotion were further exemplified through his roles as Chaplain and past Commander of American Legion Post 232, positions he held with immense pride.
Ricky C. was a man of varied interests who found joy in woodworking, building train sets, and watching sports. His enthusiasm for athletics was reflected in his unwavering support for his favorite teams: Notre Dame, the Chicago Cubs, the Blackhawks, and the Boston Red Sox. These passions enriched his life and offered moments of connection with friends and family alike.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Frances Chmielik; his niece, Wendy Berdovich; his nephew, Robert Savage Jr.; and his brother-in-law, Andy Brouwenstyn. Surviving Rick are his beloved siblings: Robert (Shirley) Savage, Jeanne Brouwenstyn, and Mary Beth (Marian) Misiak. He also leaves behind a cherished extended family, including nieces and nephews Amy (Andy) Lemanski, Alan and Tommy Savage, Deanna Thompson, Danny Misiak, Katie Misiak, and Sabrina (fiancée Kurt VanderMolen) Misiak. His great nieces and nephews—Jeremy (fiancee Kristy Hesselpine) Kirleis, Emily (Tyler) Black, Brent Thompson, Christopher and Braden Savage, Jordan Berdovich, Jayde (fiancée Matt Spilker) Berdovich, and Isabella, Teddy, and Frank Misiak—as well as his great-great nephews Ethan and Bradyn Kirleis, carry forward his memory. Numerous friends also mourn the loss of a kind and devoted companion.
Visitation will be held on April 23, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Bocken Funeral Home, located at 7042 Kennedy Avenue in Hammond, Indiana. A prayer service will follow on April 24, beginning at 9:15 AM until 9:30 AM at the same location. A Mass celebrating Rick’s life will take place on April 24 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 7140 Arizona Avenue, Hammond, Indiana. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Calumet City, IL.
Throughout his life, Ricky C. steadfast commitment to service, family, and community shone brightly. His legacy as a veteran, leader, craftsman, and devoted sports enthusiast touched all who knew him. He will be remembered with great respect, admiration, and love.
The family kindly requests that memorials be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) as a tribute to Rick’s enduring spirit and devotion to his fellow servicemen and women.
