Robert E. Canning, age 85, of Chicago, entered into the presence of His Lord and Savior on Sunday, December 31, 2023.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Sandra J. Canning (nee Nevills); five children; Dawn (Larry) Nyman, Denise (Jose) Corona, David Canning, Daniel Canning and Darrin (Meridith) Canning; nine grandchildren: Jennifer (Robert Gronemeyer) Osborn, Caitlyn (David) Slater, Daniel Canning, Megan Corona, Matthew (Heather) Corona, Alexandra Canning, Emily Canning, Daniel (fiancée Mckenna Hetzel) Canning and Stephanie (Zach) Spiehler; seven great-grandchildren: Taj, Benjamin, Hannah, Ava, Cam, Asher and Autumn. Cherished nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and dear friends.

Preceded in death by his parents Robert Canning and Gloria Virginia Kasperski (nee Reisner).

Family and friends are invited for a time of visitation on Thursday January 4, 2024 from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Palos-Gaidas Funeral Home,11028 Southwest Highway, Palos Hills, IL. A funeral service officiated by Pastor Joe Best, will be held on Friday, January 5, 2024 at 10:30 a.m., with interment to follow at Chapel Hill Garden (South) Cemetery, Worth, IL.

Robert was a lifetime resident of Chicago, IL, where he graduated from Westcott Vocational High School in 1956. He married Sandy, the love of his life, on October 10, 1959.  Bob and Sandy grew their family and their faith, serving the Lord faithfully as members of Bethany Baptist Church in Chicago for decades. He would be known as Mr. Canning. All the while, he worked tirelessly for Albertsons-Jewel Foods as a forklift operator until his retirement in 1999. In his free time, he loved working in his woodshop and was an excellent craftsman who could repair just about anything. He also loved vacationing in the Wisconsin Dells; going for walks and doing his puzzles. Most of all, he loved his family and spending time with them.
