Robert L. Coomes, age 94 of the Hessville section of Hammond passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, November 10, 2012.
He is survived by; 2 daughters: Connie Pepler of Griffith and Nancy (Marty) Pavelka of Dyer.
5 grandchildren: Tammy (Ron)Dorin,Tracy (Buck)Murphy, Marty Jr., Rich and Jenny Pavelka.
8 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild
1 brother Ralph Coomes and 1 sister in law Betty,
numerous nieces, nephews; and a host of dear friends.
Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years Martha J. Coomes (Nee Thomas), Son in law Bill Pepler, Parents,John and Fannie Coomes,3 brothers Kenneth (Louise), Charles and Jimmy (Velva) Coomes and sister in law Lucille Coomes.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, November 15th, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Bocken Funeral Home, 7042 Kennedy Avenue, Hammond (Hessville) with Pastor ___ officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Hammond. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Wednesday, November 14th at Bocken Funeral Home
from 4-7p.m.
Bob was a resident of the Calumet Area for over 62 years, He and his wife Martha owned and operated the former Hessville 5 & 10 Store. Robert faithfully served our country during WWII in the Army as a radio operator and was awarded 3 bronze stars for participating in Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. Bob loved golfing, boating, bowling, fishing, traveling and was a small craft pilot.
He was a wonderful father, grandfather, great and great great grandfather, brother and a dear friend to many. Bob was active in the Lions Club, Hessville Business association and meals on wheels and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Bob's memory to the Hospice of the Calumet Area or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
