Dr. Ruth Elizabeth Tanner, age 80, of Munster passed away peacefully on Monday, October 27,2014 surrounded by her loving family.
She is survived by God Children: Judith (Kirk) Warner, Paula (William) Barkley, Chaya (Sanford) Levy, David (Adele) Macy; brother: Donald (Maxine) Tanner; sister: Beulah Lane; sisters in-law: Helen, Elana and Janet Tanner, many grandchildren, great grandchildren nieces, nephews and close friends
Preceded in death by her parents: Ernest and Ruth Ella Tanner; siblings: Nora (Rolandis) McVay, Faye (John) Davidson, June, Virgil and Gene Tanner.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, November 2, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Bocken Funeral Home 7042 Kennedy Avenue, Hammond (Hessville) with Pastor Maurice Parrish officiating. Friends are invited to meet with the family at Bocken Funeral Home on Sunday, November 2,2014 for a memorial visitation from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.
Ruth was bor in Williamstown, WV. Her education includes graduating Belpre High School in 1952, Rio Grande College (Magna Cum Laude) in 1955, The Baptist Institute for Christian Workers in 1956, University of Arizona (Masters Degree in Public Administration) in 1960. She moved to Hammond in the early 1960's and began investing herself in this community. Ruth worked at Brooks House of Christian Service, The Neighborhood Youth Core, Girl Scouts of America and in the Hammond Schools. While working she continued her education earning a Master of Arts Degree in History from DePaul University in 1970 and her PhD in School Administration from Purdue Lafayette in 1982. Ruth worked at Maywood and Eggers as a teacher, Hammond Tech and Hammond High as an Assistant Principal and at Morton Elementary as a Principal. Dr. Tanner has had a positive influence in more children's lives than we will ever know. She was loved by many and will never be forgotten.
