Szyaw "Julie" Lindsey, age 73, of Hammond, IN passed away
peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on the morning of
Wednesday, May 8th, 2024.
Julie is survived by her four children: Scott E. Lindsey, Steven C.
Beatty, Philip B. Chiang, and Shelby Hsiao; two brothers: Lifeng
"Lee" Hsu and Sungfeng "Calvin" Hsu; two sisters: Hsiuyeh "Pat"
Hsu and Miaolan "Marilyn" Hsu.
She is preceded in death by her parents: Chufu Hsu and Linteh
Chung.
Julie was born in Hsinchu, Taiwan where she graduated from
Chiangsu School in Taipei, Taiwan. She was the first in the family
to immigrate to the United States in 1972, where she attended
Purdue University. In 1980, Julie founded her own travel agency
Universal Tours and Travel located in Munster, IN. During this
time as a travel agent and tour guide, she was able to pursue her
passion of traveling the world, having met and connected with
many people along the way. Many of her trips early-on involved
guiding military veterans in China. She was instrumental in
helping coordinate the donation of Vietnam monument pieces to
the Community Veterans Memorial Park in Munster, IN.
Additionally, she proudly served as principal of the Northwest
Indiana Chinese School and was very active in the community over
the years.
In her free time, she enjoyed working on home projects, gardening,
antiquing, and spending time with family. Julie's primary focus
was always towards taking care of her children, ensuring they had
everything they needed and supporting their interests. This caring
nature extended to many others in the community as well, earning
her the reputation of acting as everyone's aunt or "Ayi". She
touched many people and will be deeply missed by all who knew
her.
A memorial visitation to celebrate Julie's life will be held at
Bocken Funeral Home in Hammond, IN on Saturday, May 18th,
2024 from 2:00PM to 5:00PM.
