Doris Roach-Heft Obituary

Doris Marie (nee Walker) (Roach) Heft, 86, of Sparta, Georgia (formerly of Hammond, Indiana) departed for her heavenly home on December 18, 2023, following a motor vehicle accident not far from her home. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and resilience that will forever be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to have known her.

Doris was born on July 24, 1937, in White Pine, Tennessee to her parents, George Lee and Frances Lane Walker. She grew up in Jefferson County, Tennessee and graduated from Maury High School in Dandridge. While working at a soda fountain in Jefferson City, Tennessee, Doris met the love of her life, Ed Roach. Ed asked Doris on a date every day for several weeks and she said no every time. She finally agreed to a date and the couple eloped and married three weeks later on March 29, 1958. Their marriage was of the storybook variety, and their love created a family that became the foundation of her happiness.

Doris faced the heartache of losing her beloved Ed when he passed away on February 11, 1981. It was a period of profound sorrow that tested her strength and courage. In the face of adversity, she found solace in the memories they had built together and the love that continued to live on in her heart.

Ever the care provider, Doris married Bob Heft on June 23, 1983. Together, they forged a new chapter filled with companionship, understanding, and caring for dependent family members. Doris and Bob shared 40 years of marriage together.

Doris is survived by her second husband, Bob Heft, daughter Judi (Pete) Hall of Monroe, Georgia, and son Dan (Cindy) Roach of Winder, Georgia. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Christoper (Tiffany) Foss, Lisa Schiller, Matt (Mandie) Foss, Kevin (Gabby) Hulsey, Tyler (Nina) Cameron, Jennifer Hall, Hannah (Reese) Quehl, Jaret Foss, Kaylee Hall, and six great-grandchildren, Kortlynd Lukowski-Foss, Sasha Stevens, Cash Stevens, Luke Foss, Charlie Hulsey, and Ezra Quehl . Her memory will live on through the stories, lessons, and love she shared with each of them.

Doris is preceded in death by her husband Ed Roach, first born child Kenneth Lee Roach, and daughter Nancy Lynne Roach.

A memorial service to celebrate Doris’s life will be held on Thursday, December 28, 2023, at Bocken Funeral Home, at 7042 Kennedy Avenue, Hammond, IN 46323. The family will receive visitors from 11:00am to 1:00pm with the funeral service beginning at 1:00pm. Graveside services will follow immediately after at Oak Hill Cemetery in Hammond.  Memorial donations may be made to the John Hancock Academy, ATTN: Headmaster Keith Martin, P.O. Drawer E, Sparta, GA 31087 in Doris’s name. Flowers are also welcome.

Let us remember Doris for the warmth she brought into our lives, the love she shared unconditionally, and the indomitable spirit that defined her journey through life. May she rest in eternal peace in the presence of God, reunited with her first love and forever held in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to call her mother, wife, Granny and friend.
